Why New Year’s Resolutions Don’t Work!

This is not another article about New Year’s resolutions! In my opinion, THEY DON’T WORK! Don’t get me wrong, we all have good intentions, but studies have shown that only a small percentage of people actually have success with New Year’s resolutions.  In fact, I hate the concept altogether. When I hear someone say they have a New Year’s resolution, what I really hear is, “I am making an excuse to put something off another day.” Every day, I share with people that the key ingredient to changing a bad habit to a good habit is willpower. I am sure you have heard that before. However, look at willpower in a different way. Willpower is driven by belief. If you have belief that you can do something, why wait or put a date on when you will start?

By waiting to implement a goal or intention, you are actually fueling the fire of procrastination! You are increasing your belief that it is not possible by pushing off the start date. Sure, some people might have some success at first. Yes, there are people who have total success, and I commend those, as well.  But let’s face it, if you really wanted to make a change, you would have already begun making that change, and you would not be reading this article. Take a good intention and start by adding action NOW!

If you truly have passion or a goal to change a behavior, you need to train your brain right now. Change the way you think, and you will change your world. Pick the one thing you want to do and start developing the structure of a new habit that you desire more. Take small steps every day to make changes and reinforce your desire with belief of what you want. This repetitive programming will become a habit. Each day will intensify your willpower. Your old unlimited belief and bad habit will then be replaced with the new repetition of a good habit.

Hold yourself accountable and start right now to make a change that you desire. Don’t allow any thoughts about change to be random. Put it into action now with just a small, simple act of willpower and see how each day builds toward creating the change you desire. When you see small changes as the result of setting realistic expectations, you will reinforce your desire to stay on track. So, start now and don’t put it off.
